THE LOCATION

21 The Strand - Rock Paper Scissors is a hugely successful beachfront fish and chip store located in Townsville North Qld. RPS (as it is affectionally known by locals) opened on The Strand in 2015 in an enviable location on Townsville's main beach front.

When the opportunity presented to take on the entire building, The Treehouse was born - named for the giant, historic Banyan tree that shades the outdoor dining area.

Two new brands have been added to the location with the theme of fun continuing the Rock Paper Scissors tradition, the new stores were named Checkers Pizza and Hopscotch Ice creamery.

The perfect mix – fish and chips, pizza, ice cream, cold beer and the beach.

In 2016, following the success of Rock Paper Scissors at 21 The Strand, the Townsville City Council agreed to give us a section of roadway for us to convert to an outdoor dining area. This 200+sq meter deck is fully furnished, seats approx. 100 people and is lit with solar lights. The vibrant contribution the Treehouse makes to Townsville's foreshore continues to be recognized by council with the giant banyan tree recently being lit by council to feature against its namesake.

Accompanying the eateries, the 3 bedroom, upper level of the building has been converted to Airbnb accommodation. This gorgeous apartment enjoying expansive veranda's overlooking the marina and park could easily provide onsite living for an owner to enjoy.

THE CUSTOMERS

Fish and chips, pizza, ice cream by the beach - there is truly something for everyone, forming a platform for a very large consumer base that transcends age, gender and dietary preferences. The legacy of 10 years of Rock Paper Scissors branding has seen a shift in vocabulary with our customers referring to Rock Paper Scissors as a 'food group'. They say 'let's have Rock Paper Scissors' as opposed to 'let's have fish and chips'. The strength of the branding of Checkers and Hopscotch will surely see this trend follow.

MARKETING

Professional marketing collateral and specials have been developed, and professional photographs and videos will be supplied for ongoing use.

Marketing activities are developed for TV, Radio, Facebook, Instagram, Direct Mail, SMS blasts and Bulk emails.

OPERATIONS

The refined processes and procedures honed over the current owners 10 years of Rock Paper Scissors ownership have been applied to Checkers and Hopscotch to deliver smooth running and consistent, efficient operations with minimal staff.

While the menu has been designed to offer something for everyone it also has a very small inventory resulting in almost no wastage and high food turnover.

Fully integrated Point of Sale (POS) software with kitchen display system optimizes efficiency, minimizes errors and enables live speed of service monitoring. Remotely track and monitor sales transactions and labour hours via the POS app.

The business is run undermanagement. The business has excellent staff retention which reflects the great culture ingrained in the brand. The operations manager has been with the company for 9 years and many staff are second generation employees.

We take sustainability very seriously.
The fish used at RPS has been certified 3 times by the global MSC and is classed as one of the world's most sustainable fish. The company that catches the fish for RPS also uses baffles, technology and innovation to protect other marine wildlife and birds. In order to be sustainable the fish needs to be caught at various times in their breeding / growth cycle. This means it is caught in different parts of the ocean at different times of the year but ALWAYS in the cold waters between Australia and New Zealand at between 200m and 800m deep. It's complicated but that's why we did our research – so RPS customers can enjoy their food with a good conscience.

The theme continues at the newly launched stores with the paddock to plate story of Hopscotch using Australian jersey cow milk ice cream made in small batches and delivered to store on demand. Raw, unprocessed jersey milk, direct from the farm combined with fresh flavour ingredients ensures the creamiest product with minimal processing. At Checkers, freshly picked at store herbs top and garnish our pizza's created from fresh market produce.
